First and foremost, we are beginning with shaking hands. You have certainly heard already many stories about handshakes and many of you know how to properly shake. But let’s repeat it so you do not forget.

Handshake differs from region to region and it is difficult now to name the rules how and where to shake hands. However, given that the first handshake (and sometimes only one) is physical contact with another person, you must leave a good quality impression. Believe it or not, on the basis of handshakes, many persons built relation depending on how you did that first physical contact. When you travel somewhere you may want to familiarize yourself with the culture of the people, because handshake is very different among regions. For example, in Russia, it is natural to give a kiss on the cheek than to shake hands, and in some Asian countries men are holding hands, somewhere shake of hands is firmer and somewhere milder, and so on. Basically, the differences between countries are huge and it would be good to adapt to and meet the culture of handshakes because you want to make a good first impression.

As for the things that are undesirable – they are often used by people who should know all about shaking hands. Politicians can often shake hands and tap it with left hand, some familiar faces show their superiority and they will try to show the forefinger during handshakes and there is a lot of similar situations. The basic rule of hand shakes is not to break your arm with strong pressure to your interlocutor, but you should stay moderate and adapt to the culture. Indeed, a strong handshake does not reveal the superiority, but only causes a certain amount of unease of interlocutor and confusion of feelings. Be modest and do not refuse handshakes because only through handshake you can make a quality contact with another person.

Avoid pointing finger or giving him middle finger

Showing the finger at someone is extremely ugly and insulting gesture that people do not like. Avoid it, especially in children, because it has a powerful psychological effect that draws the subject in the wrong direction. Professional name of this pose is ‘Archery position’, when in fact it is a variation of the prayer position of hands. Thus, pointing of the fingers touching at the top, where palms do not touch. This hand position is one of the strongest indicators of confidence and point to the trust in our thoughts. It is often seen in people with high social status, and some analyzes indicate that the position of his hand is very hard to get tid of because these people practice it unconsciously.
This position has a few of its variations – when only index fingers are stretched while the rest of the hands is in prayer position, or when only thumbs are extended.
In contrast to this position, the exact opposite is the prayer position where all the fingers are narrowed because it shows a lack of self-confidence.

One way of showing self-confidence is also a gesture where the hands are in our pockets, and out of them only thumbs are showed. Generally, raising thumbs in the air is very positive gesture in most circumstances and it shows enviable confidence. On the other hand, when the thumbs are down or for example hidden in pockets, a person has a low level of confidence.
However, there is one exception, with postures called “framing genitals”. So, when you retract your thumbs into the waistband of your pants and fingers are outstretched to show genitals, broad enough to say that you have framed this strategic place. This gesture is showing superiority to opposite sex and let them know that you are real man.
